Chicago Public Schools officials started to the public Wednesday for what may come in Dec when they decide what schools will be closed, consolidated or turned.
At the conforming to of the Board of Education, Oliver Sicat, the new district chief portfolio officer, told there's a correlation between bad performing schools and school buildings underused. CPS officials said they rely on academic achievement as the main factor that determines the redesign of schools, but the use of facilities will also be taken into account.
"What this may mean is that our parents vote with their feet," said Sicat.
"Performance Level" A school is harvested by a complex calculation that assigns points based on state test scores, measures of growth and attendance of students, among other factors. The bottom of the standings, level 3, c is for schools in the district were placed on probation because of poor performance. Most schools in the CPS probation focused on the south and west positions of town, where buildings underutilized were also high, according to Sicat.
Chicago instructors Union chairman Karen Lewis rejected the submission Sicat as an attempt to create a smoother reception for the annual school still controversial revisions.
"They're just dragging it out and dress under a different name," said Lewis.
Last yr, the district announced projects to consolidate sixteen schools. After a public outcry, four schools were spared.
Any new school closure or consolidation must be announced by December 1 as part of a law signed final month by Governor Pat Quinn.
